What is RSS?

Syndicated content, otherwise known as Really Simple Syndication (RSS), is a popular way to distribute information from websites. Using RSS, a news site or a blog can feed its new articles or entries to a group of subscribers automatically. Because RSS is still new, not all websites can publish in RSS. However, there are thousands of RSS sources, and you can find those sources all over the world.

How do I use RSS?

You need an RSS reader, such as My MSN or others listed on the right, to use RSS feeds. RSS readers allow you to find feeds and subscribe to them, so that content is delivered to you. Using My MSN to subscribe to an RSS feed takes only a couple of clicks, and does not involve any fees.

After you have subscribed to an RSS feed, headlines will become available in your reader. When you see a headline that interests you, just click it to view the full article.

RSS Readers

There are many different Really Simple Syndication (RSS) readers available—My MSN is only one of them. Some readers are designed with user interfaces that resemble e-mail inboxes instead of browsers. Whatever your preference, all RSS readers are used to collect, update, and display RSS feeds. While My MSN is one of the easiest RSS readers to use, here are a few that you may find useful:

If you use one of these other readers, you can also use My MSN for RSS. Just follow the procedure for subscribing to RSS feeds by using My MSN.

You can also search for an RSS reader.

Find and subscribe to RSS

Subscribing to a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed is similar to subscribing to a magazine. When you subscribe to a magazine, each new issue is mailed directly to you. When you subscribe to an RSS feed, every time a new entry or article is published to the Web, a link to the entry or article is added to your reader.

Add a feed by entering a Web address

  1. Go to the site you want to add.
  2. Look for a little orange button labeled ‘XML’, ‘RSS’, or ‘ATOM’, which indicates that the site syndicates its content.
  3. To find the url for the syndicated content, right-click the button and click Copy Shortcut.
  4. Paste the url into the appropriate location in your RSS reader.

If you use My MSN as an RSS reader, you can also find and subscribe to feeds in the following ways:
Search for feeds by keyword

  1. Click Add Content.
  2. In the Search for content box, type a word that describes the content you’re looking for (such as sports or weather) and then click the Go button (green arrow). RSS feeds that contain your search terms in article headlines or abstracts will appear.
  3. Select the check box for each RSS feed that you want to add to My MSN.
  4. Click OK.
  5. When you see the new module on your page, you can click Change Details to organize content from your new feed.

Add a feed by clicking a ‘MY MSN’ button

Anywhere you see a ‘MY MSN’ button, it indicates an RSS feed that you can add to your My MSN page.

  1. Click the ‘MY MSN’ button.
  2. If not signed in to My MSN, you will need to enter your Microsoft .NET Passport e-mail address and password.
  3. If you are already signed in, or after you sign in, verify and select the content you want to add, and click OK.
  4. When you see the new module on your page, you can click Change Details to organize content from your new feed.

Note: The content you add will display at the bottom of the left column of My MSN.
